BEING ANGLICAN

THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF CANADA

The Anglican Church is divided into regional groupings called "dioceses". Each diocese has its own bishop, who has the overall responsibility for the spiritual well-being and administration of the churches within the area.
Diocese Logo In Canada more than 800,000 Anglicans worship in 30 dioceses, from Vancouver Island to St. John's, Newfoundland, and from the country's southernmost point to the Arctic Circle. The Most Rev. Fred Hiltz is the head (called the "Primate") of the national church. The Anglican Church of Canada supports churches in large urban areas, small rural villages, and in remote northern regions. In addition to English, worship is conducted in many other languages, including French, Spanish, Cantonese, Japanese, Mandarin, as well as Indigenous languages.

The Parish of St. John the Baptist, Fort Frances is located in the Diocese of Keewatin, and our Bishop is the Right Rev. David Ashdown. The diocesan office is located in Keewatin Ontario and the cathedral of the diocese is St. Alban’s in Kenora. Keewatin is divided up into three regions: Southern (of which St. John’s is part), Northern Ontario and Northern Manitoba. The Diocese has adopted four principles by which it operates.
FOUR OPERATING PRINCIPLES

  1. Each region is self-determining, but we walk together for strength.
  2. We are consciously cross-cultural with shared leadership.
  3. Our primary ministry is healing and reconciliation.
  4. For the Diocese to survive the parishes must thrive (ministry is most effective at the local level).

Anglican churches throughout the world are united in what is known as The Anglican Communion and have the common bond of descent from the Church of England whose head is the Archbishop of Canterbury, The Most Rev. Rowan Williams. The Anglican Church in each nation is autonomous, but all look to Canterbury for leadership of the worldwide church.
The Anglican Church of Canada is in full communion with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada.
